73. Outside the Palace Hotel, Childers. Some may remember June 23rd 2000.

Fifteen young people died when a backpackers hotel in Childers (300 km north of Brisbane) was destroyed in an arson attack. The popular hotel was used by backpackers working their way around the country, as it is in the fruit and vegetable growing area of Qld. A man who had been staying there apparently lit the fire as he had a grudge against someone in the hotel. Six Britons, two Dutch, One Irish, one Korean and one Japanese tourists were killed, plus four Australians. The community rallied around to support the survivors, raising and donating money to fund their recovery.
